Accessible taxis – why we need them.
At the moment locally is served by a mixture of Public and Private Taxis amounting to around 500. For a long time, there was only ONE wheelchair-accessible taxi in the local area. Following a change in licensing rules in 2017, this increased to 41. However, in 2021 to promote covid recovery the policy was suspended and the number halved.
Why should disabled people be the only group expected to make sacrifices? Many experience unfair discrimination by being refused equal access to public transport as is their right.
Disabled people use taxis for a variety of reasons, they are sometimes the only form of transport some people have for getting out of the house. They use taxis for getting to work, getting to appointments, socialising, group meetings, etc., and what they don’t need are any extra obstacles put in their way. Many of those who are users of wheelchairs are also reliant on benefits or if they are working part-time wages/low pay, and so cannot afford the extra costs of having to go out with the local area. Social isolation is now thought to be the equivalent of smoking 10 cigarettes a day.
We are currently urging a fairer policy and better promotion and usage of disabled taxis
